Your skin was never one thing: it's two layers — a thin outer epidermis you touch, and a thicker dermis beneath it, a springy scaffold of collagen and elastin. Between them runs a hidden, interlocking seam of microscopic ridges — the dermal-epidermal junction — that laces the two layers together like fingers. After 60 that seam flattens, losing roughly a third of its depth, and the grip loosens, which is much of why older skin shears, tears, and bruises so easily. Deeper still, the cells that build the scaffold — fibroblasts — retire (they become senescent), and some begin releasing enzymes that quietly dismantle the very scaffold they once built, adding a slow, silent inflammation.
