Kutná Hora — The Secret 1 Hour From Prague
Kutná Hora is the best day trip from Prague because it offers UNESCO-listed Gothic architecture and silver mining history without the capital's crowds. Prague is brilliant, but it can be a claustrophobic mess of tour groups. If you want to see the real Central Bohemia, Kutná Hora is just an hour’s train ride east and feels like a genuine breath of fresh air. It’s a town built on silver, literally and figuratively. St. Barbara’s Cathedral is the standout — a massive, three-peaked Gothic masterpiece that wasn't actually paid for by the church, but by wealthy miners looking to flash their cash. The town centre, specifically around Palackého náměstí, is properly beautiful. You’ve got the Baroque Plague Column from the 1700s and the looming St. James’s Church, which only has one tall tower because the ground was apparently too unstable from all the silver tunnels underneath to support a second one. I spent some time wandering the grounds of the former Jesuit College, now the GASK gallery, which has a terrace lined with statues that feels like a mini Charles Bridge but without the elbows-out crowd. The real history is at the Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr), the former Royal Mint where they used to hammer out the famous Prague Groschen coins. Standing in the courtyard of what was once the kingdom’s nerve centre makes you realise why this was the second most important city in the region. After exploring the mint, I highly recommend a five-minute breather in the Breüer Gardens right outside the walls; it’s incredibly peaceful, especially in the spring. Kutná Hora is a rare find that isn't overrun yet, making it a top-tier escape for anyone tired of the usual Prague tourist traps. Have you found any other hidden gems within an hour of the capital, or is Prague still your favourite? Let me know in the comments if you think this silver town is worth the detour.
