While living in Ottawa, Princess Juliana gave birth to her daughter Princess Margriet. To ensure she would be born fully Dutch, Canada temporarily declared the hospital room neutral territory. This moment created a lasting bond between Canada and the Netherlands. To this day, the Netherlands sends thousands of tulips to Canada every year as a symbol of gratitude and friendship — a tradition that began with this remarkable wartime story.
