The British Officer Everyone Laughed At Until He Changed the Course of the War!

In November 1939, General Wilson wrote to General Wavell requesting that Percy Hobart be removed from command of the Mobile Division in Egypt — the formation that would become the Desert Rats. "There is no confidence in his ability to command the Armoured Division to their satisfaction." Four months later, that same formation annihilated an Italian army ten times its size at Beda Fomm. Hobart received no credit for the victory. He was in a Worcestershire village as a Home Guard corporal. This investigation follows Percy Hobart through a series of official verdicts — each one delivered with professional confidence, each one subsequently overturned by events at very specific cost to others. The German armoured doctrine that destroyed France in 1940 was built on principles Hobart had published in British military journals since the 1920s. Wavell, asked in later years to explain his decision to dismiss him, could not. The appeal Hobart made to the King was never forwarded by the War Office, which had no intention of reinstating him. Churchill intervened personally in October 1940: "I am not in the least disturbed by the prejudices against him in certain quarters. Such prejudices attach frequently to persons of original view who strike out new lines of thought." Hobart was reinstated. His enemies tried to remove him again on medical grounds. Churchill rebuffed them. Hobart was reassigned to raise the 79th Armoured Division, and given one specific mandate: solve the Dieppe problem. What he built — and what General Bradley declined before D-Day — is the most documented single illustration of what a wrong verdict costs.
