Cells need to exchange substances with the external environment and prevent harmful substances from entering. To do this, they use passive or active transport systems that may or may not involve the use of carrier proteins or ATP (the sodium-potassium pump is very important!). These mechanisms also regulate the amount of water flowing into the cell (and therefore its tone) thanks to a process called osmosis.
