The president of the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), Roberto Lagos, explained that the country has the highest inflation rate in Central America due to a disproportionate growth in the money supply, which reached 61.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The official described the unbacked issuance of 36 billion lempiras between 2022 and 2025 as a poor institutional practice. This issuance stemmed primarily from a 24 billion lempira loan from international reserves granted to the government and 12 billion lempira contributions to Banprovi. To counteract this excess of fictitious money in circulation, which is putting pressure on domestic prices and fuel costs, the BCH is implementing a sterilization process using monetary policy instruments.
