Interview by: Rabab Azzam Poet Ahmed Douma is known as a political activist who was convicted in a case widely known as the "Cabinet Events," which began in December 2011. During that period, several political activists and revolutionaries announced a sit-in in front of the Cabinet building, which escalated into violent events. Amidst the clashes and confrontations, the case emerged, with Douma being listed among the accused. The authorities continued to punish Douma, and numerous attempts to release him failed. However, he found solace in literature, especially poetry, as his final refuge to stay alive. He gathered what remained of his strength and repeatedly wrote about the feelings and experiences he and several of his colleagues endured behind prison walls. "Kairaly," one of the three collections of poems that Douma managed to smuggle out of prison over the past ten years, was finally published and announced. However, after his release and the announcement of a book signing event, Douma was met with an intensive campaign against him, accusing him of blasphemy and putting him at risk of facing charges of religious defamation, which frequently targets intellectuals and creatives.
