SONORA MEXICO 1940s TRAVELOGUE NOGALES, HERMOSILLO, LOS ALAMOS, GUAYMAS 49624
Made in the late 1940s or early 1950s, DOWN MEXICO WAY is a travelogue that shows the northern Mexican state of Sonora. The film begins in Nogales, with shots of the border crossing and customs house as well as tourist shops selling blankets, pottery, and many other items. At the 1:50 mark the famous Caverna Restaurant is shown, which was built inside a gigantic cave (supposedly once used as a jail for Indian prisoners) in the hillside of Sonora. The Cavern Restaurant suffered a huge fire in the 1980s and has been closed ever since. Various Spanish missions including those built by Father Kino are shown beginning with San Ignacio at 3:50, followed by Magdalena and San Diego del Pitiquito, Atil (?) and Caborca. Rancho El Alamo is seen at 4:29, and Hermosillo at 5:49. The city's modern architecture is shown as well as historic sights. At 7:44, the Playa de Cortez hotel at Guaymas is shown, one of the most famous resorts on the Gulf of California. Excellent coverage of the pool and the bar, including the pouring of many wonderful mixed drinks and music played by a mariachi band. At 11:08, Los Alamos is seen with its historic streets and buildings, one of the most charming cities in Mexico. Hecho a fines de los años 40 oa principios de los 50, DOWN MEXICO WAY es un cuaderno de viaje que muestra al norteño estado mexicano de Sonora. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
