Kansas Black Mass Sparks Catholic Response and Prayerful Opposition | EWTN News Nightly

A group of Satanists from Leavenworth, Kansas, planned to hold a Black Mass at the Kansas State Capitol on March 28. Governor Laura Kelly intervened, prohibiting the event inside the Capitol but allowing it to take place on the Capitol grounds. In response, Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann led efforts to retrieve a consecrated host believed to have been taken by the group of Satanists for use during the Black Mass. However, the leader of the Satanic group later testified under oath that they did not have one. Catholics responded to the situation with prayer, consecration to Christ through Mary, and participation in adoration and Mass across the state. Archbishop Naumann condemned the event, stating, "It is a sad day for Kansas when our state Capitol is being used to host satanic worship that is intended to mock God, mock Jesus Christ, mock all people of faith, mock all Christians, and, in particular, to mock our Catholic faith." The head of the Satanic grotto was arrested inside the Capitol for assaulting a protester. Chuck Weber, Executive Director of the Kansas Catholic Conference, emphasized the spiritual battle at play and encouraged others to view the situation as an opportunity for evangelization.
