The 2 Easiest Ways to Enjoy the Beautiful High Tatras (Slovakia)

This High Tatras travel guide shares our experience in High Tatras, Slovakia. It includes things to do, where to eat and where we stayed in Poprad. -------------- How I afford to travel on a budget: https://travelforalmostfree.com/ref=t... Penzión Slávia in Poprad: https://booking.tpo.lv/TK3SkZgA --------------- The High Tatras in Slovakia offer dramatic mountain scenery without the crowds you’ll find in the Alps. In this video, we spend two days hiking glacial lakes, waterfalls, and forest trails, all while getting around by public transport and avoiding unnecessary ticket fees. We base ourselves in Poprad, one of the larger towns near the High Tatras. Staying in Poprad makes logistics easy thanks to supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and lower accommodation prices compared to mountain resorts. Our accommodation was a simple pension near Poprad-Tatry station, close to the Tatra Electric Railway, one of Europe’s oldest electric mountain railways. This train network connects Poprad with key trailheads like Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, and Hrebienok. We also explain how to save money on Tatra Electric Railway tickets, including using the IDeme vlakom app to avoid station and onboard fees, and why buying a whole-day hop-on-hop-off ticket is cheaper than paying for one-way fares. On day one, we take the train from Poprad-Tatry to Štrbské Pleso station and hike from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské Pleso. This easy and scenic trail connects two famous glacial lakes and is suitable for families. Highlights include Štrbské Pleso lake, Popradské Pleso lake, traditional wooden carvings, souvenir stalls, and views of the surrounding High Tatras mountains. Lunch options include Majláthova Chata and the Horský Hotel canteen. On day two, we explore the area around Starý Smokovec and Hrebienok. From Starý Smokovec station, we hike the green trail up to Hrebienok, skipping the funicular. From there, we visit the Cold Stream Waterfalls, a series of cascading waterfalls in a forested valley. We continue on to Rainer’s Cottage, the oldest mountain hut in the Tatras, before hiking back down to Starý Smokovec. We also share what it’s like eating in Poprad, including the surprisingly good Vietnamese restaurants and budget-friendly food court options. If you’re planning a trip to Slovakia and want alpine scenery without a car, this High Tatras itinerary shows exactly how to do it by train. We also spent time in Bratislava before coming here, so check out our Bratislava video to see what else Slovakia has to offer.
