Day the World Changed Forever | The Emmaus Encounter | Luke 24:13-35 | Jacob Cherian | City Harvest Sermon Outline : THE DAY THE WORLD CHANGED FOREVER LUKE 24:13-35 | THE EMMAUS ENCOUNTER JACOB CHERIAN One of the most elaborate and thrilling stories in the NT Jesus joins the two “on the way” (24:32, 35) Asks questions - 2:46 -- God initiates the conversation – he wants to engage us rather than forcefully reveal himself to us! Why could they not recognize Jesus? They would see Jesus, once the eyes of their hearts were opened to understand the Scriptures Hopes shattered – Redemption of Israel - Ex 6:6 The Battle of Emmaus – Sept 165 BC The disciples struggled with the Cross & the Kingdom (Acts 1:3, 6) Like them – we too struggle with the cross and the kingdom! 24:27 – The greatest Bible class that was never recorded! 24:44 – Jesus fulfilled the Ta-Na-K (the Hebrew Bible) Luke 9:31 – John 3:14 – John 6:35 - John 1:18; John 5:39-40 The entire NT is, in a sense, an Emmaus-road teaching 24:30 = 9:16 - Took – gave thanks – broke – gave (same Greek verbs); cf. 22:19 24:31 = Gen 3:7 – their eyes were opened – and they recognized We see Jesus: When we see the Word in the word (the Scriptures); When we see the Cross When we break bread in fellowship (Acts 2:42) The Emmaus Encounter—one of the most thrilling and profound stories in the New Testament. Drawing from Luke 24:13–35, we explore how two disciples, disillusioned and heartbroken after the crucifixion, meet the risen Christ without knowing it. As they walk, talk, and finally break bread with Him, their eyes are opened and their hearts burn within them. Discover: Why Jesus chose to walk “on the way” rather than reveal Himself immediately How our hearts are opened through the Scriptures and the breaking of bread What the Cross and the Kingdom meant to the early disciples—and to us today The prophetic fulfillment of the Hebrew Bible (TaNaK) in the life of Jesus Why the road to Emmaus still speaks to us today This message is more than a biblical lesson—it's an invitation to encounter Jesus in your own journey, even in moments of doubt and disillusionment. Key Texts: Luke 24:13–35, Exodus 6:6, Acts 1:3–6, Genesis 3:7, John 3:14, John 6:35, John 5:39–40 Watch till the end for insights on how to truly see Jesus—in the Word, the Cross, and the Table.
