No passado Sanlucar la Mayor foi habitado por por diferentes civilizações. Na época romana chamavam a cidade de Lucus Solis, (o lugar do sol), e existia um templo dedicado ao culto do sol. Na época árabe chamavam-na Al-bayda (a Branca). Em 1251 foi conquistada pelos cristãos e passou a fazer parte do reino de Sevilha. O centro histórico foi declarado Sítio de Interesse Cultural Andaluz e incluído na Rota Al-Mutamid. In Roman times they called the city Lucus Solis, (the place of the sun), and there was a temple dedicated to the cult of the sun. In Arab times they called her Al-bayda (the White). In 1251 it was conquered by the Christians and became part of the kingdom of Seville. The historic center was declared a Site of Andalusian Cultural Interest and included on the Al-Mutamid Route.
