Types of Mumbai Suburban AC EMUs

1) First Video — Early AC EMU Prototype (ICF AC EMU – First Generation) Built by: Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Type: ICF-based AC EMU (2017 first batch) This is one of the very first AC local trains introduced in Mumbai. Key characteristics • Formed as two 6-car units (6 + 6 = 12 cars) permanently coupled • Motor coaches at the outer ends of each 6-car unit carry pantographs • No gangway between the two units — you can only walk through half the rake • Reason: heavy traction equipment is not underslung, just like non-AC ICF locals Running gear & braking • Classic ICF bogies • Tread (shoe) braking — brake blocks press directly on the wheel • Noticeable older-generation ride and braking sound Interior design • All-steel seating • Steel pipe guards/railings near doorways • Steel rod luggage racks • Interior feels like a premium version of old Mumbai locals, not a new design This was essentially: “Take the existing Mumbai ICF EMU platform and make it air-conditioned” It proved AC locals were viable but exposed the limitations of the old EMU architecture. 2) Second Video — New Generation AC EMU (Medha / Underslung Equipment Type) Built by: Medha Servo Drives in collaboration with Integral Coach Factory Type: New-platform AC EMU (Mumbai’s modern standard) This is the current and future of AC locals in Mumbai. Key characteristics • Formed as three 4-car units (4 + 4 + 4 = 12 cars) • Full gangway from one end of the train to the other • Possible because most traction and electrical equipment is underslung Running gear & braking • LHB-style FIAT bogies • Disc brakes mounted on axles • Much smoother ride, quieter braking, better stability at speed Interior design • Seats are composite/steel hybrid (no freezing steel shock) • Doorway guards are framed with composite + large curved glass panels • Modern luggage racks with glass/acrylic and composite framing • Entire interior feels like a metro/modern EMU, not a legacy local This is the first AC EMU in Mumbai that was: "Designed as an AC EMU from the ground up, not adapted from older stock." This design solves every limitation of the first generation. 3) Third Video — Later ICF AC EMU Variant (Improved First-Gen Type) Built by: Integral Coach Factory Type: Revised ICF AC EMU (same platform as first, later batch) At first glance this looks like the first one — and mechanically, it mostly is. Same architecture as the first • 2 × 6-car units • No inter-unit gangway • ICF bogies with tread braking • Equipment largely inside motor coaches, not underslung What’s different • Pantograph orientation flipped front-to-back • Distinct buzzier traction sound (different traction package/auxiliaries) • Door interiors have metallic 3D cube/grid finish • Luggage racks upgraded to glass/acrylic + composite framing This batch shows ICF trying to modernize interiors while still using the old mechanical platform. This is: “Refined version of the first AC EMU, before the complete shift to the Medha/LHB-style platform” These three AC locals show the complete evolution of Mumbai’s air-conditioned EMUs — from ICF-based adaptations with half-train walk-through, to a fully modern underslung, full-gangway AC EMU platform that rides more like a metro than a traditional Mumbai local.
