Venezuelan poet Rafael Cadenas, during his acceptance speech for the Cervantes Prize on Monday, April 24, called on "democrats" to "call loudly for the renewal" of the current democratic system, something he considers "urgent" because it is at risk. "It is urgent to defend it from all that threatens it, and for that, it needs to be recreated. This task falls to education, which has neglected it. In countries where it exists, a pedagogy is needed to strengthen it; in others, which have not known it, it is futile to try to introduce it," he stated in his speech at the University of Alcalá de Henares's Paraninfo. In a speech with several allusions to current events, Cadenas expressed his concern about the current world situation, quoting the psychiatrist Karl Jaspers. "He had two fears: one of totalitarianism and the other of the bomb. In this time, the former is advancing and the latter has grown. It is paradoxical, indeed, that the most civilized nations are among the leading arms manufacturers.
