Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the film tells the story of the rise and fall of Emma Hamilton, dance-hall girl and courtesan, who married Sir William Hamilton, British ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples. She later became mistress to Admiral Horatio Nelson. ► N O T E Being one of the collaborations of then husband and wife duo, I must say Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier were at their best here. Although it isn't the most memorable of their works, I found that Lady Hamilton is a great movie, and I would recommend it to anyone who is starting off with old hollywood films (in all honesty, this is what old hollywood was all about, and not just films by Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn – though I love them both too).
