Geologic Wonder In The Peruvian Andes: The Rainbow Mountain!
As a Rockhound, I found the Rainbow Mountain located high in the Peruvian Andes to be a Geologic Wonder: layer upon layer of mineral rich sedimentary rock exhibiting colors like a rainbow. The specific colors are created by distinct minerals interacting with oxygen and water: Red and Pink: Composed of claystone, siltstone, and mud rich in iron oxides (like rust). Green and Turquoise: Produced by chlorite-bearing clays and phyllosilicates packed with iron and magnesium. Yellow and Mustard: Caused by limonite and sulfur-bearing minerals.White and Cream: Composed of ancient quartz-rich sandstones and limestone (calcium carbonate). Lavender and Purple: Formed by a mix of marl (clay and calcium carbonate), silicates, and oxidized limonite. Scaling the 17,000 foot neighboring peak to get a prime view of the Rainbow Mountain ("Vinicunca") was no easy task. Breathing at that altitude can be problematic. We took it slow and easy. The experience was exhilarating!
