Taking Apart a Land Rover LT230 Transfer Case #landrover #diy #mechanic

Somewhere in the middle of France, on our way back from the UK (okay, Dijon), we lost drive and were towed home. Just like you, I pulled the transfer case and had a look inside. And, by the way, this was in a field - our 'lawn' - which is exactly what I wanted to do, pulling the ethos of what a Land Rover is towards me. Easily repairable wherever you are. Normally, this is an opposing concept. You either know exactly what needs to be done (far more than I do), or you outsource to a garage and let them take care of it. But what if you're somewhere in the Saharan dunes, or the Colombian jungle? And you have some parts, but there's no mechanic to be found? This is where I wanted to insert myself and find out if I could get this thing going again. Either way, it isn't going anywhere at the moment anyway, so, if it doesn't work out I can always just order another gearbox, or take it to the local mechanic. Spoiler alert... It's a field repair! The problem was somewhere in the LT230 transfer case of our trusty old Defender 100 200Tdi. So, the obvious thing to do was to take it out, strip it down 'in the field', and find the problem.
