Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV Review | Better Than Tiggo 7 PHEV & J7 PHEV?

While the e.MAS 7 EV impressed us with its tech, it suffered from a "bouncy" ride on uneven Malaysian roads. The PHEV, however, brings a much-needed refinement to the chassis. It handles significantly better — more planted, more composed, and far less vertical movement when things get wavy. Theoretically, if your daily commute is under 100km, you’ll never need to hear the internal combustion engine (ICE) kick in! Size Matters: The PHEV variant is slightly larger than the EV sibling in length and width, giving it a more commanding presence on the road. It's also larger then the Honda CR-V hybrid (e:HEV RS). Comfort vs. Speed: It’s a tad slower to 100km/h (approx. 8.2 seconds) compared to the EV, but the interior comfort remains top-notch. It’s the perfect cruiser for those long Penang-to-KL runs. Practicality Trade-offs: You get a larger boot (528L) compared to the EV, which is great for family trips. However, you do lose that clever additional storage space under the rear seats to make room for the hybrid hardware. The Competition: Proton vs. Chery vs. Jaecoo How does it stack up against the Chinese heavyweights? Performance: The Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV and Jaecoo J7 PHEV both pack turbocharged engines and boast higher combined horsepower/torque figures. The "Proton" Edge: Despite the turbo disadvantage, the e.MAS 7 PHEV actually feels quicker and more responsive in real-world urban sprints thanks to its 11-in-1 Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). Range King: While it might lose out on total combined distance to some rivals, the 1,000km total range (WLTP) is still a massive deal, making range anxiety a thing of the past.
