📌HISTORIC CENTER | PELOTAS | RS: Cel. Pedro Osório Square and its mansions, theaters, and hotels 😌#4k #walkingtour Hello Walkers! Today, the Walking Urban Planner invites you to explore a bit of the historic center of the city of Pelotas. Let's explore Coronel Pedro Osório Square and its surroundings, which are composed of beautiful mansions full of history and part of a group listed by IPHAN (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage). We begin our walk at the Clube Caixeiral, which arose from the mobilization of traveling salesmen and was founded on December 25, 1879. Its headquarters were built in 1904 by Caetano Casaretto. We enter the square and find some of its many monuments, which help tell the story of the city. Among them are the busts of Dr. Brusque Filho, Dr. Francisco de Paula Amarante, and Dr. Miguel Barcellos. We can sit for a while to rest next to the famous writer from Pelotas, João Simões Lopes Neto. The sculpture, dated 2016, is by Léo Santana, responsible for works such as the statue of Carlos Drummond de Andrade, located on a bench on the Copacabana boardwalk in Rio de Janeiro. We pass by the Teatro Sete de Abril, the oldest theater in Rio Grande do Sul, and meet Colonel Pedro Osório, the personality who gives his name to the square and was honored with a monument by Antônio Caringi. Right in the center of the square, we find the Fonte das Nereidas fountain, imported from France by the Pelotas Hydraulic Company in 1873 to adorn the city and supply the surrounding population with drinking water. Interestingly, in Edinburgh, Scotland, there is a fountain identical to the Fonte das Nereidas. We passed by the old house number 59, where only the facade remains today, which belonged to the military and political figure from Rio Grande do Sul, Manuel Luís Osório, General Osório; by the semi-detached houses nº 1 and nº 3, which were built by Commander Joaquim Assumpção - the Baron of Jarau; by buildings nº 2, 6 and 8, which form an eclectic architectural ensemble listed by IPHAN (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage) and where a cultural center and the Museum of Sweets operate; and finally we arrived at the Guarany Theater, inaugurated on the night of April 30, 1921, when the Italian Lyric Company Marranti premiered with the opera O Guarani, by Carlos Gomes.
