This can damage the roots and cause unnecessary harm to the cactus. Instead, you should carefully loosen the root ball: Gently run a spatula or knife between the pot wall and the potting mix; this works well for plants that are firmly rooted or in clay pots. This way, you can gently loosen the plant from the pot. For plastic pots, gentle pressure on the sides is often enough to loosen the root ball.
