The Hymn! by Stacey V. Gibbs
From generation to generation, music has been used to express the feelings of others from a wide range of cultures. It is rare that you encounter a piece of music that channels the inner feelings of one’s culture and connects them to another. Stacy V. Gibbs “The Hymn!” achieves this by combining three of America’s well-known traditional songs in order to craft an arrangement that breaks the barrier definition of what a hymn can be. Stacy V. Gibbs's “The Hymn” combines “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” to demonstrate a nuanced take on the word patriotism. Patriotism, by definition, translates to “devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country.” Although each of the hymns expresses these qualities, each defines the phrase expressed above differently. Because Gibbs has utilized songs derived from distinct origins with various meanings, he is able to combine the way each song expresses the term unity.
