Helmut Sonneberg alias "Sonny" is an original among the fans of Eintracht Frankfurt, life artist and Holocaust survivor: In the hr documentary "SONNY - a story about the Holocaust and Eintracht Frankfurt" on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the 90-year-old tells Helmut Sonneberg on his martyrdom during the Nazi regime, life after the Holocaust and his love for Eintracht Frankfurt. The hr documentary will be released on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27 and is also available in the ARD media library. Helmut Sonneberg, just called "Sonny" by everyone, is 90 years old and an original in the Eintracht Frankfurt fan scene. The Holocaust survivor traveled to the 1959 German Football Championship in Berlin between Eintracht Frankfurt and Kickers Offenbach with a beetle and a top hat on his head ─ and had a tooth removed before the 1959 final. For several decades, however, "Sonny" was silent about a deeply sad chapter: Helmut Sonneberg survived the Holocaust as a Jew, was separated from his family in Frankfurt, beaten and humiliated on the street. In 1945 the Nazis deported him and his mother to the Theresienstadt camp. The Nazi reign of terror stripped Sonny of being “German”, and “Sonny” found trust in society again through his love for Eintracht Frankfurt. In the hr documentary, “Sonny” speaks emotionally about the Shoah, the worst years of his life, but also the joys he had with Eintracht Frankfurt and his 17 different jobs – from taxi driver and mechanic to pub owner.
