[Nehemiah 11:1-24] 'The chiefs of the people stayed in Jerusalem, and as for the rest, by casting lots, a tenth came to dwell in the holy city of Jerusalem, and the rest were divided to dwell in other cities. And for all who volunteered to dwell in Jerusalem, the people blessed them. Israel, the priests, the Levites, the Nethinim, and the descendants of Solomon's servants dwelt in the various cities of Judah, each in his own city and his own inheritance. These are the chiefs of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem: those who dwelt in Jerusalem were the descendants of Judah and some descendants of Benjamin. Among the descendants of Judah was Adaiah, the son of Perez, who was the son of Uzziah, the grandson of Zechariah, the great-grandson of Amariah, the great-great-grandson of Zephatiah, and the fifth-generation descendant of Mahalalel; and also Maaseiah, who was the son of Baruch, the grandson of Golhoshe, the great-grandson of Hashaiah, the great-great-grandson of Adaiah, the fifth-generation descendant of Joarib, the sixth-generation descendant of Zechariah, and the seventh-generation descendant of Shiloh. The total number of the descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem was four hundred and sixty-eight, all of whom were mighty warriors. The descendants of Benjamin were Salun, the son of Mesullam, the grandson of Joeth, the great-grandson of Pedaiah, the great-great-grandson of Kolaiah, the fifth-generation descendant of Maaseiah, the sixth-generation descendant of Idiel, and the seventh-generation descendant of Jeshaiah; next were Gabbai and Salai, and so on, totaling nine hundred and twenty-eight. Joel son of Sigri became the overseer, and Judah son of Hassenuah became second in command and governed the city. Among the priests were Jedaya son of Joarib and Jachin, and Seraiah, who was in charge of the temple of God; he was the son of Hilkiah, the grandson of Mesullam, the great-grandson of Zadok, the great-great-grandson of Meraioth, and the fifth-generation descendant of Ahitub; and his brothers who worked in the temple; the total number was eight hundred and twenty-two. Also there was Adaya, the son of Jeroham, the grandson of Peliah, and the great-grandson of Amshi. He was the great-grandson of Zechariah, the fifth-generation descendant of Pashhur, and the sixth-generation descendant of Malchiah; he was the chief of his brothers, and the total number was two hundred and forty-two. Also, there was Amathai, the son of Asarel, the grandson of Ahshai, the great-grandson of Mesilemoth, and the great-grandson of Immel; he was also the mighty warrior of his brothers, and the total number was one hundred and twenty-eight. Zabdiel, the son of Hagdolim, became the overseer. Among the Levites was Shemaiah, the son of Hashubh, the grandson of Asrigam, the great-grandson of Hasabiah, and the great-grandson of Bunni. Also, there were the chiefs of the Levites, Zabbedai and Josaphat; they were in charge of the work outside the house of God. And there was Mattaniah, the son of Micah, the grandson of Zabdi, the great-grandson of Asaph; he became the chief who led the word of thanksgiving during prayer. Among the brothers, Bakbugiah was second in rank. And there was Abdani, the son of Sammua, the grandson of Galal, the great-grandson of Jeduthun; the total number of Levites in the holy city was There were two hundred and eighty men. The gatekeepers were Akkub, Dalmon, and their brothers; the total was one hundred and seventy-two. The rest of the people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites were scattered throughout all the cities of Judah, each dwelling in his own inheritance. The Nethinim dwelled in Ophel, and Siha and Kishbah became their chiefs. Uzzhi, son of Bani, son of Hasabiah, grandson of Hasabiah, great-grandson of Micah, the descendant of Asaph, who sang, became the overseer of the Levites dwelling in Jerusalem and governed the affairs of the house of God, for by the king’s command, he was to provide daily provisions for the singers. Pedaiah, son of Meshezabel, the descendant of Zerah son of Judah, governed the affairs of the people under the king.
