DESFILE de JUVENTUD en VOLGOGRADO - Otro Mundo
Far from the history books, Volgograd pulsates with the routine of a modern working-class city. Located in the Volgograd Oblast, with a regional population of 2.5 million, it is an industrial center of the Southern Federal District, where metallurgy, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and oil refining generate 40% of its economy. With an estimated population of 992,268 in 2025, this southern Russian city, the 16th largest in the country, combines the weight of its Stalingrad past with a daily life marked by factory work, the aroma of borscht in the markets, and the echo of sirens commemorating the heroes of World War II. With a rising regional GDP thanks to steel and fertilizer exports, shifts at plants like the Volzhsky steelworks define the daily lives of many residents. But the grace of the women and the beauty of the landscape are far from those images, as you stroll through the city or along the waterfront at sunset. Daily life unfolds in markets like Centralny, where vendors sell Georgian khinkali, pelmeni, and the ubiquitous black bread, washed down with homemade kvass. The southern steppe climate—hot summers up to 35°C and mild winters—encourages outdoor activities. Ethnic diversity, with Russians, Tatars, and Cossacks living side by side, enriches the culture: festivals like the Cossack Song in June fill the squares with dances and balalaikas. On ordinary evenings, people simply stroll in search of the breeze and the Volga horizon. In 2025, the city experienced a modest tourism revival, with 1.2 million annual visitors drawn by its war museums and the bridge over the Volga, the longest in Europe. Modernization projects, such as the electrification of trams and eco-parks, seek to revitalize the city center, although the Western-sanctioned economy limits the pace. Locals, known for their Southern hospitality, share anecdotes in banyas (saunas) or in riverside cafes, where vodka flows in moderation during the long summer nights. Founded in 1589 as the Tsaritsyn fortress in Cossack territory, the city we know today as Volgograd has witnessed turmoil over the centuries. Renamed Stalingrad in 1925 in honor of Joseph Stalin, it became a key industrial stronghold during the Soviet era, with tractor and arms factories that fueled the Industrial Revolution on the Volga. However, its most defining chapter came during World War II: the Battle of Stalingrad, which lasted from July 17, 1942, to February 2, 1943, marking a turning point in the global conflict. On the banks of the majestic Volga River, Volgograd stands as a symbol of Russian resilience, an industrial metropolis that bears the scars of one of the bloodiest battles in history in its streets and monuments. This confrontation between Nazi forces and the Red Army resulted in the largest and bloodiest battle in history, with more than two million casualties on both sides. The Soviet defense, under the command of generals like Vasili Chuikov, transformed the city's ruins into an urban hell where every building became a fortress. The victory, achieved in a brutal winter, not only halted the German advance eastward but also inspired Allied resistance throughout Europe. In 1961, after Khrushchev's de-Stalinization, the city regained its name Volgograd, although its identity as a "heroic city" remains etched in the Russian collective memory. On the streets of Volgograd, nostalgia for the Soviet era mingles with optimism for the future among the children of Stalingrad; survivors of the worst and owners of a promising present. #openyourwindowtotheworld #TravelingIsHyperSurviving 🌎 Subtitles in Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Russian, and English.
