From Shackamaxon Island to Haddonfield - Quakers & Lenapes in Early NJ

Lenape living in the Cooper River and Timber Creek region (including present day Camden, NJ) resisted full-scale colonization for decades. They remained sovereign, protecting personal and religious liberty while avoiding violence through peaceful conflict resolution. Though Friends shared these values, the epidemics and colonists’ greed for land resulted in the decline of Armewamese towns similar to patterns in militarized colonies such as Virginia, Massachusetts and New Netherland. The latest book by speaker Jean Soderlund, professor of history emeritus at Lehigh University, is Separate Paths: Lenapes and Colonists in West New Jersey. Michele Lise Tarter introduced Jean on behalf of Haddonfield Friends Meeting. Brought to you by southjerseyquakers.org
