It is considered the greenest and most musical island in Greece. Currently, it is inhabited by about 110 thousand residents, and its area is just under 600 km². ☀️ The island's climate is mild with a large amount of rainfall, which is conducive to agriculture. Olive groves, vineyards, citrus plantations with kumquat leading the way are the true pride of the island. Tourism is also of great importance. ☀️ The island has been admired for centuries. According to Homer, this is where Odysseus met Princess Nausicaa and where his ship was turned into rock by Poseidon, who thus avenged the blinding of his son Polyphemus. Famous writers and poets have written about it. ☀️ The island of Corfu is not called the "Musical Garden of Greece" for nothing. The inhabitants are exceptionally musical, there are many music schools and philharmonic orchestras. The first philharmonic in Greece was also established here. 🏖 The capital of Corfu delights with monuments and atmosphere Corfu is also the name of the island's capital. Particularly interesting is the Old Town, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007. It does not resemble traditional Greek cities. Instead, you can see excellent Italian, or rather Venetian architecture, a bit of Paris and Great Britain. This is the aftermath of centuries of rule by these countries in Corfu. Greece only regained the island in 1864. ☀️ When visiting the capital, you cannot forget about the two fortresses, which are magnificent defensive works, and the Cathedral of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of the island. In this beautiful church, there are still relics. ☀️ On the coast at the foot of the capital is Vlacherna, a small monastery with snow-white walls. Located on a small islet, connected to the mainland by a causeway, it looks amazing against the blue sea. From here, you can sail to Mouse Island, or Pontikonissi, which looks like a green hemisphere on the sea with a white, historic church surrounded by cypresses and pines. 🏖 Unconquered fortress and six beautiful beaches From the capital, it is worth going to Paleokastritsa, a beautifully located town on the western coast of the island. The coast is cut by as many as six bays, and each is completely different. They are united by having charming beaches and crystal clear water. ☀️ Above the town towers an old monastery, in which monks still live today. You can and should visit it. Special attention should be paid to the church museum and gardens. ☀️ Just a few kilometers north of Paleokastritsa is Angelokastro, the Castle of Angels. This never-conquered fortress was an important defensive and observation point. To this day, it commands respect with its size and solidity of the walls, although only ruins remain of the fortress itself. The views that stretch from this place are also delightful. 🏖 Unusual places in the north of the island The northern part of Corfu is mountainous. Here is the highest peak, Pantokrator (906m above sea level) with an ancient monastery. But the most famous place on the northern end is Canal D'Amour, or the Canal of Love. It is located in Sidari, the most touristy town on the island. ☀️ A less known, and according to many a much more beautiful place is Cape Drastis. This cape is the northernmost point of the island. The fantastically eroded white rock formations that stand out against the intensely sapphire sea are delightful here. ☀️ There are plenty of beaches on Corfu. Various - sandy, pebbly, small, large. Right next to Cape Drastis is one of the more interesting ones, Logas Beach. It is famous for its cliffs and sunsets. ☀️ It's also worth visiting two other beaches. The first one is in Agios Georgios, a small town spread over hills.
