As we enter Shiva Asar B’Tammuz and the Three Weeks, Rabbi Rowe explores the deeper meaning of Bein Hametzarim, beginning with the historical tragedies of the 17th of Tammuz and Tisha B’Av, and moving into the spiritual root of what we are really mourning. The Three Weeks are not only a time to remember the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash. They are a time to confront the brokenness of Jewish history, the pain of exile, the tragedy of sinas chinam, and the deeper loss of Hashem’s revealed presence in the world. Rabbi Rowe explains how the Beis Hamikdash was the place where a person could reconnect to reality, dissolve the ego, and experience true alignment with Hashem, with others, and with the purpose of life. Without it, humanity is left fragmented, self-centered, and lost. Tracing the root of Tisha B’Av back to Gan Eden, Rabbi Rowe connects the word Eicha to Ayeka, Hashem’s first question to Adam after the sin: “Where are you?” The mourning of Tisha B’Av is ultimately the cry of a world that has lost its unity, its clarity, and its connection to Hashem. But those tears are not the end. When we truly feel what is broken, we begin preparing ourselves to rebuild.
