The Need for Grid-Forming Inverters in the Future Power System
This video was produced when the laboratory operated as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The laboratory is now the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). This presentation discussed the need for grid-forming inverters in future power systems and explains why this is the most critical topic to address to achieve 100% clean energy goals. The presentation sets the context for clean energy grids, discusses why grid-forming inverters are important, and highlights the start of a new Universal Interoperability for Grid-forming Inverters (UNIFI) Consortium that aims to unify the operation of synchronous machines and inverter-based resources in large power systems.
