How to Understand Expensive Wine I recently released a video citing scientific research proving that expensive wines don't outperform affordable ones in blind tastings. And yet, the luxury wine segment isn't suffering as a result. They're becoming increasingly expensive, especially in certain regions, like Burgundy. You often ask me how to prepare for expensive wine and learn to understand it. Today, I'll try to answer that question. I've read dozens of books on tasting. They all teach tasting and evaluating wines based on various criteria: acidity, tannins, and so on. But for a wine connoisseur, all these standards are less important, as the main thing is to enjoy the wine. And yet, the better you know the subject, the more you enjoy it. This can be said about any art form, and wine is no exception. So, to understand expensive wines, you need to study wine.
