This is also called regurgitation. Have you ever experienced these symptoms? Then stay with me because that's what I'm going to talk about today. I'm Carlo Cunha, a family doctor, and in today's health tip, the topic will be GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX!!! Gastroesophageal reflux is a very common problem in our society. Studies show that the symptoms I mentioned at the beginning of this video—heartburn (that burning sensation that goes from what many people call the pit of the stomach to the throat) and acid regurgitation (the acidic or sour taste in the mouth)—are present in 10 to 20% of people—defined as at least one episode of one of these two symptoms per week. As the name of the disease itself makes clear, gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the food content in the stomach returns inappropriately to the esophagus—and this becomes chronic and repeated. (Note: "gastro" refers to stomach—hence gastroesophageal reflux.) I will now give you the main preventive recommendations for relieving symptoms and preventing complications of reflux. 1. Do not lie down for at least 1.5 to 2 hours after meals. Avoid eating large quantities at once. The fuller your stomach is, the greater the risk of reflux. 2. Elevate the head of your bed. You can place a book, brick, or block of wood under the feet of your bed to raise the head by about 20 cm. People with lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction experience worsening reflux when lying down, as gravity no longer prevents the stomach contents from returning to the esophagus. 3. Avoid eating acidic foods (citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, pineapples, tomato paste, spicy and seasoned foods) - these foods worsen heartburn when regurgitated. 4. Also avoid foods that relax the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing acid reflux (coffee, chocolate, fatty foods, fried foods, whole milk, carbonated drinks, mint, and peppermint). 5. Don't smoke, avoid alcoholic beverages, and also avoid wearing tight clothing – think about it, tight clothing can cause increased pressure in the stomach area, worsening reflux. 6. Finally, remember that reducing body weight in overweight individuals also helps improve reflux symptoms. Some people, when experiencing stronger, more intense symptoms that haven't improved with these preventive measures, may need medication for treatment. This, of course, will depend on each person's individual assessment with their doctor. Similarly, there are situations where reflux can be triggered by a condition called a hiatal hernia. Therefore, in certain specific cases, in situations of greater symptom intensity or a greater degree of esophageal involvement, without a good response to clinical treatment, an evaluation regarding the possibility of surgical correction may be necessary.
