Tradition, identity and maturity. Is puberty the right age for tā moko? | The Hui 2026
Ngāti Awa tā moko artist Turumakina Duley has dedicated his life to tā moko a journey which has taken him around the world. Now he’s settled back home in the Bay of Plenty town of Whakatāne with his whānau for his next chapter. Last year he graduated from Te Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in Whakatāne with his PHD where he researched the traditional practices around tā moko in his iwi of Ngāti Awa. In particular he focused on the traditional practices around moko being used to mark different milestones in life - starting from the age of puberty.
