These Emergency Response Rooms are more than temporary initiatives; they are well-organized bodies comprising over 10,000 volunteers spread across Sudan’s states. Over the past 20 months, they have supported more than 4 million Sudanese affected by war. Despite facing disrupted communication networks and blocked humanitarian aid, they have forged new pathways and developed innovative, locally-driven solutions to help their communities endure and resist the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in Sudan. None of this would have been possible without the collective strength and solidarity of the Sudanese people—both within the country and across the diaspora. This vital work is fueled by self-organized support from local communities and the Sudanese diaspora worldwide. At Nas Shagala, we celebrate these ongoing efforts, recognizing that strong, locally-led structures like the Emergency Response Rooms are critical for ensuring sustainable and effective responses. Their work remains impactful, well-organized, and deeply rooted in addressing the immediate needs of their communities.
