Islam in Timor Leste Timor Leste was once part of Indonesia. Although Muslims have always been a minority in this region, while it was still part of Indonesia, there was significant attention and increased da'wah activities there. Timor Leste, formerly known as East Timor, and parts of East Nusa Tenggara, are predominantly Christian. This is primarily due to the long period of Portuguese rule in this region. In fact, Islam arrived in this region earlier. However, unfortunately, Islam was largely eroded by Christianity, brought by the Portuguese, whose mission was to spread Christianity throughout their colonial territory. Currently, there are only around 5,000 Muslims living in Timor Leste. This represents only three percent of the total population. The primary reason is that many Muslims who originally lived here were transmigrants from Java. After the country became independent, they returned to their homelands. Under the new government, the majority of the population is Christian, with Muslims receiving only a small portion of their presence. The Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Articles 12 and 45, guarantees freedom of religion. Islamic holidays, such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, are also national holidays.
