♧♣︎ORIGIN STORIES PT.6♣︎♧ June 20, 1982, remains a landmark date in the history of the Ngoni people of Zambia 🇿🇲. On that day, beneath the historic Kachele Tree at Ekuphehlweni Palace in Efeni Village near the Zambia 🇿🇲–Malawi 🇲🇼 border, Inkosi YaMakhosi M'mbelwa III crowned David Njengambazo Jele as Inkosi YaMakhosi Mpezeni IV. The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders from across the Ngoni Nation and Zambia's First Republican President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, highlighting its national significance. Born David Njengambazo Jele, Mpezeni IV was the son of Paramount Chief Mpezeni III (Khuzwayo Pontino Jere) and a descendant of King Zwangendaba Jere, the legendary Ngoni leader who led his people from present-day South Africa 🇿🇦 into Central Africa during the nineteenth century. Before becoming chief, he lived in Efeni Village and later worked in a factory in Livingstone, unaware that he would one day inherit the Ngoni throne. Following the death of Mpezeni III on June 11, 1981, the Ngoni Nation entered a traditional one-year mourning period known as the "Year of the Witch-Hunt." During this time, the Angoni Royal Council deliberated on the succession and ultimately selected David Njengambazo Jele as the rightful heir. Royal emissaries travelled to Livingstone to inform him of his destiny, leading to his coronation a year later. His installation marked the continuation of the Jere royal dynasty and the beginning of a remarkable 44-year reign as Inkosi YaMakhosi, making him one of Zambia's longest-serving and most respected traditional leaders. #history #culture #n'goni #ngoni #amashazed🇿🇲
