I think it's always good to start with someone you know, like an internet friend or a childhood friend you want to get in touch with again. But if you want to meet someone new, that's ok too!! I recommend starting with penpals from the same country. Shipping fees are cheaper and it also takes less time for your letters to reach each other. It's a good way to test out whether you think this would be a good hobby for you or not^^. When choosing people to be penpals, don't be afraid to be a little selective! So much of the snail mail process is the connection you have with the other person, so it is important to chose someone you think you'd vibe with. And lastly, please don't be convinced that penpalling is all about stationery, it's not!! The most important (and the only thing you need, really,) is the letter. Stationery is definitely something you can collect over time if you'd like to, but there's no 'threshold' of the amount of stationery you need in order to start penpalling.
