Lal Thanhawla Reflects On The Mizo Accord
Four decades after the Mizo Peace Accord transformed Mizoram, former chief minister Lal Thanhawla reflects on the difficult decisions that helped bring peace to the state. Speaking about the landmark 1986 agreement in an interview, Lal Thanhawla recalled why he agreed to step down as chief minister and allow former insurgent leader Laldenga to assume office following the accord. The decision, he said, was driven by a simple conviction: without peace, Mizoram could never develop. He described how years of insurgency had disrupted normal life, displaced communities and held back economic progress. Restoring peace, therefore, became the overriding objective for both the state leadership and large sections of society. Lal Thanhawla credited former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and senior Congress leader Arjun Singh for supporting negotiations and helping build trust between New Delhi and the Mizo National Front. He said the agreement succeeded because it allowed insurgents to return with dignity and fully join democratic politics. Reflecting on the accord’s legacy, he noted that Mizoram has enjoyed four decades of stability and has steadily advanced on the path of development. He also spoke about how perceptions of the North East have changed across India, recalling incidents from earlier decades when many people outside the region knew little about Mizoram. For Lal Thanhawla, the peace accord remains proof that political courage, dialogue and reconciliation can overcome even the most entrenched conflicts. Its success continues to serve as a model for conflict resolution elsewhere in India. #india #mizoram ========================================================= Disclaimer: Footage used in the video is also sourced from Reuters under our active subscription (Client No. S-88259) Join BharatShakti's WhatsApp Channel to get the latest updates: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029Vazl...
