The first Saturday of July is deeply linked to the Third Order of Carmel (also known as the Secular Carmelites), as this month is the quintessential "Carmelite month," culminating in the great feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16. For members of the Third Order and devotees of Carmelite spirituality, the first Saturdays of the month—and especially those of July—have a profound spiritual significance centered on three pillars: 1. The Devotion of the First Saturdays In compliance with the Marian request (widespread also due to the apparitions of Fatima, but with deep Carmelite roots), the first Saturday is dedicated especially to reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Carmelite tertiaries typically intensify their prayer life on this day through: Participation in the Eucharist and Confession. Praying the Holy Rosary. Meditation on the mysteries of the faith in the company of Mary. 2. The Saturday Privilege July ignites devotion to the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The "Saturday Privilege" is a promise traditionally associated with Our Lady of Mount Carmel, according to which she would release from Purgatory on the first Saturday after their death those who have devoutly worn the scapular and fulfilled the vows of chastity and daily prayer (such as the Little Office or the Rosary). Therefore, every Saturday of the month, and especially the first Saturday of her feast month, is a reminder of this promise of salvation and protection. 3. Preparation for the Novena and the Great Feast Since it is the first Saturday of July, Third Order communities usually begin or finalize preparations for the Novenas in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (which typically begin on July 7 or 8). It is a day of spiritual retreat, renewal of their promises as consecrated lay people in the world, and welcoming of new members who will receive the scapular or make their solemn promises during the feast. A traditional Carmelite prayer for this day: "Mother and Queen of Carmel, on this first Saturday of your month, I place my life, my promises, and my prayer under your mantle."
