For the people of Arunachal Pradesh's Nari-Koyu circle, survival now begins where the road ends. Nearly two weeks after flash floods ripped through Lower Siang district, 14 villages remain cut off from the outside world, forcing residents to navigate treacherous mountain trails, swollen rivers and landslide-prone slopes simply to fetch food, fuel or medicines. The monsoon, relentless and unforgiving this year, has left behind a trail of destruction across Arunachal Pradesh. But in Nari-Koyu, the disaster has transformed everyday life into a test of endurance. The raging floodwaters swept away roads and bridges, isolating entire communities that were already geographically vulnerable. For hundreds of farming families, the damage extends far beyond broken infrastructure. Vast stretches of paddy fields and agricultural landโtheir only source of livelihoodโhave been washed away, leaving many uncertain about how they will sustain themselves in the months ahead. For villagers, the biggest crisis is no longer the flood itself but the isolation that followed. With road links snapped, every essential commodity must now be carried manually over difficult terrain. Residents speak of walking for hours through forests and across fast-flowing streams to transport sacks of rice, cooking gas cylinders, medicines and other necessities. In several places, electricity remains disrupted, while access to safe drinking water has also become a growing concern. The hardships are particularly severe for children, the elderly and patients requiring medical attention. A journey that once took minutes by road has now turned into an exhausting expedition across mountains, with no guarantee of safe passage. The state government and district administration have initiated relief operations and are working to restore damaged infrastructure. However, the scale of destruction and the difficult terrain have slowed the pace of recovery, leaving thousands to fend for themselves as they wait for normalcy to return. The crisis has also exposed a larger and more troubling reality. As extreme weather events become more frequent across the Himalayan region, questions are growing over whether existing disaster preparedness and infrastructure are adequate for such recurring catastrophes. For the people of Nari-Koyu, those questions are not merely about policyโthey are about survival. Until the roads return, every day remains a struggle against distance, uncertainty and nature's fury. In these forgotten corners of Arunachal Pradesh, hope now travels on foot. #arunachalpradesh #northeastindia #monsoon #LowerSiang #arunachalnews
