Amusing introduction with the clichéd private eye or private detective as typified by popular folklore myth! A detective in wide brimmed hat walks along a corridor smoking a cigarette. He throws his cigarette away and walks into his office which has the name in glass on the door, once inside we see his silhouette get attacked by another man but our guy beats him up and pulls him out into the corridor. Inside our man ,'Hotshot' helps himself to a drink of booze from his desk. He offloads his handcuffs, knuckle duster, truncheon and pistol in holster. He opens a door and a dead woman falls out. Cuts to a small boy reading a detective magazine and comics next to a radio. .In real life a private detective is quite ordinary and we are shown one at work as a "close tail" following his quarry. Crime trackers. Shop lifters are another problem. A woman detective is shown at work in a store. False whiskers aren't required but the private detective has to dress to suit the role. Pinkertons Detective Agency are crime specialists of over 100 years standing. It was a Pinkerton agency man who foiled the Daltons, Butch Cassidy, Jesse James etc. A new man is vetted and serves his "apprenticeship". Insurance cases featuring false disability claims with the use of 16mm movie camera to record the proof. Shown being projected. Blackmail suspect is trailed. Telegram analysed.
