The M1911, also known as the Colt 1911, or the Colt Government, is a single-action, recoil-operated, semi-automatic pistol chambered in .45 ACP. It served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985. It was designed by famous American gun designer John Moses Browning and was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols were in service within the U.S. Armed Forces. It was replaced by the Beretta M9 chambered in 9mm in 1985.
