北千住 足立区の南西部に位置する千住地区中央部にあるターミナル駅。4社5路線が乗り入れており、JR常磐線の特急以外の全ての旅客列車が停車する。各線相互間の乗換客が多く、1日あたりの乗降客数（2018年度）は約160万人と世界6位の利用者数を誇り、JRグループにおいて、特急列車が停車しない駅では日本最多と、当駅は足立区のみならず日本有数のターミナル駅である。千住宿は江戸時代から日光街道の宿場町として発展した。「北千住」という名称は、千住のうち隅田川北側に位置する北組・中組を捉えた呼び名であり、行政地名としては存在しない。駅周辺は足立区屈指の繁華街であり、百貨店はないものの丸井やルミネなどの大型商業施設や、下町情緒が残る商店街が多数集積している。2000年以降は駅周辺の再開発が進み、大型商業施設と東口には東京電機大学などの大学が駅徒歩圏内に新設され、駅前広場も整備された。また、その交通利便性の高さから超高層ビルや高層マンション、大型分譲マンションなどが建設されている。 Kita-Senju A terminal station located in the center of the Senju district in the southwest of Adachi Ward. Five lines from four companies run through the station, and all passenger trains except for the JR Joban Line express trains stop here. There are many transfer passengers between the various lines, and the number of passengers per day (2018) is about 1.6 million, the sixth highest in the world. It is the JR Group's largest station in Japan that does not have express trains, making this station one of the leading terminal stations not only in Adachi Ward but in Japan as well. Senju-juku developed as a post town on the Nikko Kaido road since the Edo period. The name "Kita-Senju" refers to the Kita-gumi and Naka-gumi districts of Senju located north of the Sumida River, and does not exist as an administrative place name. The area around the station is one of Adachi Ward's most popular shopping districts, and although there are no department stores, there are many large commercial facilities such as Marui and Lumine, as well as shopping streets that retain the atmosphere of the downtown area. Since 2000, redevelopment of the area around the station has progressed, with large commercial facilities and universities such as Tokyo Denki University newly established within walking distance of the station at the east exit, and the station plaza has been developed.
