Episode 25: Because You Are Pure, Because You Are Pure The stories I will share with you today are about pure souls. The protagonist of today's story is none other than yourselves! In the summer of 2002, while doing my social work internship at the International Rehabilitation Center in Goryeong, Gyeongbuk, I had a precious experience that made me realize once again that love is something done with the heart, through my encounters with friends who had physical disabilities. Susanna, a girl who could not walk, could not speak properly, and lived entrusting her entire body to a wheelchair while barely moving her fingers, sang a lullaby for others rather than for herself. I was truly, to the point of tears, grateful that she did so! That is when I realized, "These friends are truly a blessing!" As we go through life, there are days when life is weary and the future seems bleak. There are times when we close the doors of our hearts due to wounds and depression, resent the world, and sever relationships. Just as Susanna did back then, Jesus comes to us and sings a lullaby so that our weary souls may rest. Through a connection with Father Victor Hugo, a Mexican priest I met while studying in Rome, I visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico in 2018. After many twists and turns, I celebrated the first Saturday devotional Mass at a local church in Mexico City. Through the Mass shared with my friend, Father Victor Hugo, I heard the Blessed Mother’s words once again: “Is not I here, your mother?” This is a message I truly want to share with our fellow believers who are suffering greatly due to the coronavirus. “Do not be afraid. Is not I here, your mother?” Winter 2010, the day I celebrated dawn Mass with leprosy patients at St. Lazarus Village Church The voice I heard the moment I placed the Host on a blunt, fingerless wrist during Holy Communion “Because it is pure, because it is pure” “Because that soul is pure, because it is pure” During Mass, as I distribute Holy Communion, I see the hands of countless people. When I place the Host on a child’s small, fern-like hand, it fills the palm completely. God is contained within that tiny hand. Why? Because that soul is pure... The hands of the faithful receiving Holy Communion are filled with the traces of life. How admirable is the heart of the parishioners who come to Sunday Mass to receive the Holy Communion, even while living busy lives at work and at home? Whether it is a severed hand, a bent hand, a dirty hand, or a small hand, God is contained upon it. God, who created the world and governs the cosmic order, dwells upon those small, tender hands. Why? Because each of our souls is pure.
