http://www.keysight.com/find/calibration Part 4 of 7: Stated simply, traceability is the process of relating your measurement back to the most accurate standard used by a national metrology institute, such as NIST, NPL, PTB, etc. The importance of traceability depends on your relative need for low measurement uncertainty. Although all calibration labs include the list of instruments used for the calibration of your test equipment, not all labs calibrate the critical performance tests that are important to the measurements you make. This list, also called a trace report, can help you determine if your critical measurements were calibrated.
