Achtung bissig! Ausbildung zur ZOOTIERPFLEGERIN im Kölner Zoo Terrarium

Dana is 23, works as an animal keeper at Cologne Zoo, and is responsible for—sometimes quite dangerous—animals: crocodiles, lizards, snakes, and frogs—in other words, reptiles and amphibians. We wanted to experience Dana's daily work as a zookeeper in the terrarium firsthand. Is it really just about feeding and petting? We were surprised by how little personal contact Dana actually has with the animals. We watched her work, helped clean the snake enclosure, interacted with the dangerous monitor lizard, and talked about Philippine baby crocodiles. And one thing that shouldn't be forgotten: as an animal keeper, you also have to feed animals. So, killing feeder animals is part of the job. Apprenticeships as a zookeeper are highly sought after, and many zoos require prior internships as a prerequisite for employment. If you're interested in this training, start looking for internships early. At Cologne Zoo, for example, you have to apply two years in advance. Anyone who wants to work successfully with wild animals needs empathy, keen observation skills, and a strong sense of responsibility towards living beings. Care, conscientiousness, and cleanliness are just as essential for this profession as a calm demeanor and self-control. You'll also be the point of contact for the zoo's many visitors.
