Hyundai Motor decide que será imposible extender el contrato con Ford, que había estado en una alianza técnica previa, y comienza a desarrollar su propio modelo siguiendo a Pony, por lo que en 1979 comienza el desarrollo del Stellar. El motor y la transmisión del Stellar fueron desarrolladas por Mitsubishi Motors. Los motores disponibles eran 1.4 l (4 G 33) y 1.6 l (4 G 32) I4 s hasta 1986 (igual que el Hyundai Pony, mediante una KM119 de 5 velocidades de transmisión manual o un Borg-Warner automática de 3 velocidades L 03-55), y uno de 2.0 l en 1987.
