Drawing A Portrait From A Photo Using Conceptualized Forms Combined With Comparative Measuring
In this 3 and 1/2 hour demo, I am studying the simplified forms of the sphere, cylinder and box, which make up the head and face. I discussed this approach in my previous video “Shading a Portrait From Imagination”. Here, I am taking some of those concepts and, by measuring Rebecca’s head shape and facial features, I am able to modify those structures to fit her unique proportions. For any aspiring art student, I would encourage you to draw the “basic shapes” of the sphere, cylinder and box, to familiarize yourself with those forms and then apply that knowledge to a portrait drawn, either from imagination, a photograph or the live model. This “conceptual” construction can easily be combined with a more “perceptual” measuring technique. Each approach has equal value. Remember, when creating a representational image, It is not so much the technique that matters as much as the principles. I offer more in depth information on topics like this through my online courses which can be found on my website provided in the link below.
