Then I looked back at my youth, which had made everyone weep with its demise, which had captivated and enamored everyone, and which had passed in sin and heedlessness; and within that beautiful, ornate garment, I saw a very ugly, drunken, and bewildered face. If I had not known its true nature, instead of making me drunk and laugh for a few years, it would have made me weep even if I had remained in this world for a hundred years. Just as one of them said, weeping: لَيْتَ الشَّبَابَ يَعُودُ يَوْمًا فَاُخْبِرَهُ بِمَا فَعَلَ الْمَشٖيبُ Meaning, “If only my youth would return one day, I would complain to it about how old age has brought upon me.” Yes, like this person, old people who do not understand the nature of youth weep with regret and longing when they think about their youth. However, if youth belongs to believers with pure hearts, peace of mind, and sound minds, and if it is spent in worship, good deeds, and spiritual pursuits, it is the most powerful means of commerce and a beautiful and charming instrument of good. And for those who know their religious duties and do not misuse it, youth is a precious and enjoyable divine blessing. If righteousness, chastity, and piety are not present, there are many dangers. With excesses, it damages one's eternal happiness and afterlife, and perhaps even ruins one's worldly life. Perhaps, in exchange for a year or two of youthful pleasure, one suffers many years of sorrow and grief in old age. Since youth is harmful to most people, we, the elderly, should thank God that we have been spared from the dangers and harms of youth. Like everything else, the pleasures of youth will inevitably fade. However, if that youth is spent in worship and good deeds, its fruits will remain, enabling one to attain youth in eternal life.
