Does Unipolar Mania Exist as a Distinct Construct in Mental Health?
This video describes the concept of unipolar mania. Unipolar mania may be observed in mental health settings, but it is usually not thought of as a distinct construct and does not have a separate diagnostic category. Many individuals with unipolar mania symptoms are diagnosed as having Bipolar I Disorder, as the presence of a manic episode, without a history of a major depressive episode, could still qualify for a Bipolar I Disorder diagnosis. Unipolar hypomania, however, would not typically be categorized as Bipolar II Disorder, because Bipolar II Disorder requires a history of a major depressive episode.
