De Blauwe Divisie bestond uit Spaanse vrijwilligers die vochten aan het oostfront. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Spanje neutraal. De Spaanse neutraliteit tijdens WO2 had te maken met het feit dat de Spaanse Burgeroorlog (1936-1939) net was afgelopen. De Spaanse leider Francisco Franco had geen zin om het land weer in een oorlogsavontuur te storten. Toch leefde er in Spanje fascistische sympathieën en waren Spaanse mannen bereid om deel te namen aan de strijd in de Sovjet-Unie. Zij gaven zich op voor de Blauwe Divisie.
