Cómo cultivar Geranios (La Flor Novio) - TvAgro por Juan Gonzalo Angel
Twitter @juangangel The genus Geranium, commonly known as geranium, groups 422 species of annual, biennial, and perennial plants frequently used in gardening for their attractive flowers and characteristic aroma. Their habitat includes all temperate regions of the world, including the mountainous areas of the tropics, although they are mostly found in the eastern Mediterranean. It includes 1,216 described species, of which only 411 are accepted. Coincidentally, geranium is also the common name, especially in subtropical regions, for several species of the genus Pelargonium (P. hortorum, P. domesticum, and P. peltatum), which includes hollyhocks and is also derived from the Geraniaceae family; this causes confusion. Formerly, the genus Geranium included species of the genus Pelargonium. In general, the species grouped in the Geranium genus are more resistant to cold than those of the Pelargonium genus, with a few exceptions such as Geranium maderense. These plants exhibit a certain flexibility in their soil requirements, unless the soil is excessively humid. This is the case with the Bulgarian geranium, Geranium macrorrhyzum, and the St. Robert's herb, Geranium robertianum. In contrast, the Spanish geranium, Geranium endressii, the sweet-smelling geranium, Geranium platypetalum, and the Himalayan geranium, Geranium himalayense, prefer organic clay soils. The rock geranium, Geranium cinereum, prefers sandy soils. Light requirements vary by species. Of those mentioned, for example, G. macrorrhyzum and G. robertianum prefer shade, while the others prefer full sun. They are propagated by: - semi-woody cuttings obtained from the mother plants during the warm season. Rooting usually takes 20 days; - Division of clumps in spring; - seed, although this will not guarantee obtaining material identical to the original. Fertilizing with humus diluted in water stimulates plant development. You can add a capful of urea per plant (taking care to place it away from the stem) every 20 days. For more continuous and clean flowering, you can remove dried flowers. The leaves are often attacked by various types of fungi, causing spots of various colors that can be controlled with fungicides. They can also be attacked by slugs, mealybugs, mites (red spider mites), and aphids, or, as they are commonly called, aphids. In the Mediterranean region, geraniums have suffered from the geranium moth pest since the 1980s, when they were introduced from South Africa. Geraniums are a type of cutting.
